CVS To Open Pharmacy-Only Locations Amid Store Closings, Corporate Layoffs

CVS is rolling out a new wave of smaller-format pharmacies in select communities nationwide as it tries to adapt to changes in the retail world.

CVS plans to open at least a dozen of these compact pharmacies nationwide in 2025, a spokesperson confirmed to Daily Voice on Monday, Mar. 10. The pharmacy-only locations aim to improve access to medications, immunizations, and pharmacist-provided health care services.

Each location will average less than 5,000 square feet, with a full-service pharmacy and a limited selection of over-the-counter products tailored to a community.

"By taking a customized approach to our footprint that is focused on the specific needs of the communities we serve, we're continuing to strategically realign our pharmacy footprint to better support patients and ensure the right geographic coverage," the spokesperson said.

The announcement comes as CVS plans to close 270 stores in 2025, Forbes reported. The Rhode Island-based company shut down 900 locations between 2022 and 2024.

CVS also said it'll continue to open some traditional locations, which have greeting cards, a small selection of foods and drinks, seasonal gifts, and other convenience store staples. The company has opened 100 stores since 2022 and plans to open 30 more traditional locations in 2025, including some inside Target stores.

The move by CVS was announced as the chain's main competitor, Walgreens Boots Alliance, struggles with financial difficulties and prepares to go private in a $10 billion deal with Sycamore Partners. Walgreens is in the process of closing 1,200 stores over three years, while another major pharmacy chain, Rite Aid, has closed more than 800 locations after filing for bankruptcy in 2023.

Back in October 2024, CVS laid off nearly 3,000 employees as part of a $2 billion cost-cutting plan. The company said store, pharmacy, and distribution center jobs weren't affected by those layoffs.

Founded in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1963 as Consumer Value Stores, CVS had about 9,100 locations nationwide as of late February, according to data company ScrapeHero.
